TORTUS WORKSHOPS MONTELUPO
Immerse yourself in a weeklong workshop dedicated to improving your pottery skills, creativity, and experiencing Tuscan craftsmanship.
At our 7-day TORTUS Montelupo Workshops, you will work in a centuries-old fornace—a historic ceramics workshop built around the kilns where generations of potters transformed clay into lasting objects. Generous spaces offer room to comfortably enjoy your time sharpening your skills under Eric’s guidance, while historic architecture and a connection to nature enrich the experience.
Learning with TORTUS
TORTUS, also known as Eric Landon, begins with a thorough introduction to his distinctive approach to the wheel. Focusing on efficiency, posture and movement, he will help you throw with less effort and greater precision.
Through hands-on practice and individual guidance, you will explore how to work with larger amounts of clay while reducing strain on the body. Daily demonstrations provide a foundation for discovering the possibilities of the wheel and learning to work with the clay rather than against it.
Workshop Programme
Day 1: The first day will focus on the not-so-basic basics: centering, coning and pulling with less effort the TORTUS way.
Day 2: The focus is on perfecting your bowls and an introduction to shaping techniques.
Day 3: Closed forms, meaning vases in different forms.
Day 4: A free day where students can focus on the forms they would like to make with guidance from Eric.
Day 5: We glaze our vessels and throw with the time remaining.
Saturday: No studio work.
Sunday: We unload the kiln filled with pieces you have made during the first days of the workshop and wrap up loose ends.
In collaboration with ROHDE, participants experience state-of-the-art equipment in a historic setting—connecting contemporary tools with centuries of ceramic craftsmanship.
The workshop welcomes participants with varying levels of experience but is not recommended for complete beginners.
Experience Montelupo and Tuscany
Beyond the studio, discover Montelupo’s ceramics culture through encounters with local craftspeople and insights into its ceramics institutions and industry. Regional cultural and culinary experiences connect your time with clay to the traditions, flavours and everyday life of Tuscany.
